Look up a word
without leaving the page.

Select an English word in any Mac app and press one shortcut. The translation appears where you're already looking — and the word joins a vocabulary that remembers you've met it before.

The committee spent an hour on a single clause. They made a deliberate choice to keep it simple, and moved on.

Lexy's overlay beside a word selected in Safari: the translation as the answer, the sentence it came from underneath, and the note that this is the second time you've looked it up.

On a phone? I'll send you the link.

Lexy is a Mac app, so there's nothing to install on the device you're probably holding. Leave an address and the download link will be waiting when you're next at your Mac.

Three seconds, not three windows.

  1. Select a word and press ⇧⌥⌘T — or configure your own

Anywhere: a browser, Mail, Slack, a PDF, a terminal. No copying, no switching windows, no pasting into a translator.

  2. Read the answer where you're looking

A small panel opens next to the selection with the translation, and the sentence the word came from underneath it. Esc puts it away.

  3. Meet the word again

Look something up twice and Lexy says so — “2nd · Sep 8”. Every word you've looked up is one searchable list, with the sentences you met them in.

Coming next

A second, better answer — a moment after the first.

Today Lexy translates on your Mac, instantly and offline. That answer is good, and it has one blind spot: a word on its own gets its most common meaning, whatever the sentence was doing with it. The next release sends the word with its sentence for a better translation, which lands in the panel a second later and replaces the first. It isn't shipping yet — here's the difference it makes.

  • The committee will table the motion until spring.

    On your Mac, now
    таблица
    With the sentence
    отложить

the verb, not the furniture — the sentence is what says so

  • She runs a small agency in Tallinn.

    On your Mac, now
    бегает
    With the sentence
    руководит

to manage, not to move quickly

  • The spring gave way under the weight.

    On your Mac, now
    весна
    With the sentence
    пружина

    the coil, not the season

Examples of the difference, shown with a Russian target language. The better answer is not in the app yet.

Nothing you look up leaves your Mac.

There is no Lexy server. Translation runs on your Mac through Apple's own translation engine — which is why it still works with Wi-Fi off. Your vocabulary is a database in your user library, and nothing is uploaded, because there is nowhere to upload it to.

Lexy does ask for the Accessibility permission, and that is a fair thing to hesitate over: it's what lets the app read the text you selected out of the app you selected it in. That is the only thing it's used for.

When the better translation arrives it will need to send the word and its sentence somewhere. That will be yours to turn on, and this page will say exactly what gets sent before it does.
